The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 builds on the acclaimed first-generation model with several enhancements. It now includes TAMRON's proprietary VC image stabilization while maintaining its compact size and weight. The revamped optical design ensures high image quality across the zoom range, and the shortened MOD at the wide end allows for unique photographic expressions.
The VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) motor ensures fast, precise autofocus for both stills and video. Additionally, it supports the TAMRON Lens Utility™ and TAMRON Lens Utility Mobile™ apps for customizable functions, improving operability and scratch resistance, making it a versatile and practical choice.

The 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065) keeps its fast F2.8 aperture, while being newly equipped with TAMRON’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) and offering greatly improved close-up capability. Even with these new features, the lens is the world’s smallest size and lightest weight for its class at 156.5mm (6.2″”) in length at 70mm and weighing just 855g (30.2oz). This compact size is a result of its size-minimizing 180mm focal length at the tele end versus bulkier 70-200mm lenses.

The design of the 70-180mm F2.8 G2 has been completely reworked from the ground up to attain uncompromising optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. This new model has an optical construction of 20 elements in 15 groups. The precision combination of multiple special lens elements including an XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion), three LD (Low Dispersion), two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) and one hybrid aspherical lens element further enhances the ability to correct for chromatic and various other aberrations. Additionally, the BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating, TAMRON’s next-generation technology, suppresses ghosting and flare to enable the crisp and clear rendition of images, and assures high resolving power that captures subjects in minute detail. Another feature is the beautiful, soft bokeh that the large F2.8 aperture provides, vastly expanding the breadth of expressive possibilities available to you. From snap photography to portraits and landscapes, enjoy a diverse range of shooting in any situation.
Capture your vision with fast and precise AF and improved tracking performance
The AF drive of the 70-180mm F2.8 G2 employs the VXD (Voice-coil extreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism. With astoundingly agile performance representing a high mark in TAMRON’s history, this AF system faithfully fulfils the intentions of the photographer to a high degree of precision in steps of 0.005mm, less than one-tenth the width of a human hair. Furthermore, the precise calculations, reworked to update the 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 (Model A067) and 150-500mm F5-6.7 (Model A057), have been applied to further enhance the tracking performance of moving objects such as vehicles and sports action, ensuring you never miss decisive scenes whether shooting still images or video. In addition, the quietness offered by the linear motor system provides nearly silent performance when using the lens in conditions where noise needs to be minimized.
TAMRON’s proprietary VC mechanism empowers mobility
To let you fully enjoy its excellent portability with ease, the 70-180mm F2.8 G2 is equipped with TAMRON’s proprietary VC mechanism. This suppresses camera shake that tends to occur when shooting at the telephoto end or during close focusing, thereby enabling stable shooting results. It’s also highly effective when shooting in low-light conditions that often lead to camera shake, like evening and night scenarios or dimly lit indoor scenes. Using AI technologies, the lens chooses the appropriate compensation characteristics for videography at focal lengths of 100mm or less to powerfully support the inherent optical performance of the lens.
Close-Focusing of 0.3m (11.8"") opens new possibilities
The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 features a minimum focusing distance of just 0.3m (11.8″”) at 70mm, unlocking unique opportunities to express your creativity with greater ease and precision. The working distance at the 70mm end is as close as 12cm (4.7″”). This expands the possibilities for expression with a single lens, allowing you to take another step forward or utilize soft, beautiful bokeh in your shots. With an outstanding maximum magnification ratio at the 70mm end of 1:2.6 and 1:4.7 at the 180mm end, you can create unique and powerful compositions that capture a subject in extreme detail, for example, zooming from a headshot to a small portion of the subject’s face.
Compatible with TAMRON Lens Utility™ software
The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 is compatible with the dedicated TAMRON Lens Utility software (for PC and Android™ [1] OS) that was developed in-house by TAMRON[2]. TAMRON Lens Utility lets users change lens settings, assign camera body functions, and update to the latest firmware[3] when necessary. In addition, when using the mobile version, functions unique to the mobile version can be operated remotely without touching the lens. Users may customize functions for various still photography and videography shooting styles, thereby providing a more personalized and fulfilling shooting experience.

Zoom Ring, Focus Ring
Grip texture has been improved by redesigning the striped pattern on the rubber focusing and zoom rings. Certain internal parts have also been enhanced. These advancements result in smoother overall operability. TAMRON has also adjusted the stiffness and torque of the zoom ring to facilitate smoother and more precise operation.

New Sculpted Shape
The diameters of the zoom ring and focus ring have been enlarged, and the body areas around them have been slimmed down to give the lens a contoured profile that makes it easier to grip. This creates a comfortable, uneven shape that fits snugly and naturally in the hand.
Deep, Luxurious Black Exterior Finish
The surface of the lens exterior is shiny black, much glossier than previous models. Improved abrasion resistance makes the lens harder to scratch and resists fingerprints.

The 70-180mm F2.8 VC VXD has a switch that can lock the zoom ring at the 70mm focal length if desired. This prevents the unwanted extension of the lens barrel due to the weight of the lens during transportation.
For greater protection when shooting outdoors, leak-resistant seals throughout the lens barrel help protect your equipment. The Connector Port is the water-proofed USB Type-C variety.
The front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that is water- and oil-repellent. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture and fingerprints.
