Images and tips by Cecil Holmes
Creative landscape photography is all about transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary. By using unique perspectives, experimenting with lighting, and incorporating compositional techniques, you can turn even the simplest scenery into a captivating image.
Whether you’re photographing mountains, coastlines, or urban landscapes, unlocking your creative potential will allow you to showcase the beauty of nature in ways that go beyond standard shots. In this post, we’ll explore expert tips to help you bring fresh, artistic vision to your landscape photography.
TIP 1: CREATING SUN STARS
Shoot into the sun to create “sun stars”. To get a good sun star, use a small aperture opening such as F/16 or smaller. It also helps to use a wider lens like the Tamron 17-28mm F/2.8 DI III RXD (Model A046).
TIP 2: USE A TELEPHOTO LENS
Don’t forget to use your long lenses for landscape images such as a Tamron 150-500mm F/5-6.7 DI III VC VXD (Model A057) lens to capture pieces of the scene. Here, the photographer isolated just the mountain peaks surrounded by color.
TIP 3: USE A SLOWER SHUTTER SPEED
Use a longer lens, like a Tamron 50-300mm F/4.5-6.3 DI III VC VXD (Model A069), to isolate your subject, like here with the sea stacks in Vik, Iceland. When you have movement of waves in the foreground, try a slower shutter speed to blur that movement and give some interest to the foreground as well
TIP 4: USE A POLARIZING FILTER
When photographing waterfalls, get low and close to a foreground element to add depth to the image. Using a circular polarizer when shooting waterfalls removes the reflection of the sky and water off the water’s surface, rocks, foliage, etc. Shooting at a slower shutter speed of around 1 or 2 seconds creates a smooth, milky water effect.
