Why I Tested This Lens
I wanted to see how the Tamron 35-100mm F2.8 Di III VXD would perform after having the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD as one of my go-to lenses. The 35-150mm is incredibly versatile, but I was curious whether the smaller 35-100mm might be a better option for documenting trips and vacations where carrying lighter gear is often more enjoyable.
What I Shot With It (Real-World Use)

I took the Tamron 35-100mm out to Healdsburg, California where I photographed a girls weekend getaway to see how the lens performed for vacation photography. Throughout the day we moved between multiple locations including wineries, restaurants, and scenic spots around town. The goal was to document the experience rather than stage a formal photo shoot—capturing candid moments, portraits, and the atmosphere of the trip as it unfolded.
It gave me an opportunity to capture the kinds of photos people often want from a vacation—portraits of friends, candid moments, and the little details that help tell the story of the trip. I shot all day into the evening at multiple locations. It gave me an opportunity to use it for portraits, a few landscapes, and documenting their experience traveling. The real question was would I miss the extra 50mm of focal length that the 35-150mm has and the answer is yes and no.
There were a few times where the extra focal length would have come in handy, but would I have wanted to carry a lens almost twice the weight for those opportunities? Probably not.

The lens performs well in a variety of shooting conditions. The VXD motor is fast and accurate, and the lens appeared to be sharp across the focal range even wide open at F2.8.
On this shoot I kept a loose style where I set up situations but sat back and documented what was happening, more than a bunch of hands-on directing. In other words the locations and flow of the day were more or less planned out ahead of time giving the opportunity for sightseeing, shopping, shooting portraits and wine tasting; things that one might do on a weekend away in that area.
All of the shooting was done in manual exposure (my preferred method) and handheld. The 35mm was plenty wide for capturing this type of adventure and 100mm was perfect for bringing in the action with some mild compression. I shot a lot with the lens wide open or nearly-so, which helped isolate my depth of field and allowed me to more easily shoot in low lighting conditions.
Why the Tamron 35-100mm F2.8 Is a Great Compact Zoom Lens for Vacation Photography

When photographing vacations or weekend getaways, the goal is often to capture memories rather than create highly planned images. A compact zoom like the Tamron 35-100mm makes it easy to capture vacation photos throughout the day without constantly changing lenses.
At 35mm you can capture environmental scenes and group moments, while the longer focal lengths allow for flattering portraits with the Tamron 35-100mm portrait lens and candid shots from a comfortable distance. Because the lens remains compact and lightweight, it is easy to carry throughout a full day of activities without feeling like you are carrying professional gear.
For photographers who want to document experiences without constantly changing lenses, the Tamron 35-100mm offers a practical balance between flexibility and portability.
Is the Tamron 35-100mm F2.8 a Good Lens for Vacation Photography?
Many photographers looking for the best lens for vacation photos want something versatile, lightweight, and capable of producing beautiful images without carrying a large camera bag.
The Tamron 35-100mm F2.8 fits that need extremely well. The zoom range allows photographers to capture group photos, candid moments, portraits, and details without switching lenses. Meanwhile, the constant F2.8 aperture helps maintain good performance in low-light environments such as restaurants, wineries, and evening scenes.
For travelers who want to bring a single compact lens capable of handling most situations during a trip, the Tamron 35-100mm offers an excellent balance between image quality, versatility, and portability.
Build Quality and Handling
The lens fits in nicely with the whole line of Tamron lenses. It feels like it’s part of the Tamron family with its modern styling and handling as well as its 67mm filter size. Obviously, it is not as weighty as its bigger brother the Tamron 35-150mm F2.0-2.8 but is lightweight and compact and has weather sealing throughout.
This lightweight design makes a noticeable difference when carrying the camera all day while sightseeing or moving between locations during a trip.
Autofocus Performance
Speaking of which the autofocus performed fabulously throughout the shoot with few missed focus images. The VXD focusing motor built into the design makes autofocusing snappy and quiet. I assume there must have been some, but quite frankly, I don’t recall any shot that I missed due to autofocus performance.
Optical Quality
The Tamron 35-100mm had surprisingly good optical quality which I could detect from the sharpness of the eyes. In my time shooting, I didn’t stop down more than F8, and both mid-range and wide open it performed well.
The bokeh was attractive, looking natural at the telephoto end. The flare is well contained, and you get a pleasing result if your goal is to intentionally create that effect.
Not surprisingly, because of the zoom range, there was not much in the way of distortion that caused any distraction. I shot on the Nikon Z8 and found nice color rendition without any correction.
Close-Up Performance
Many modern lenses for mirrorless have the macro at the wide end as opposed to the tele end, which I would prefer. This lens has 1:3.3 macro at the wide end with a minimum focus distance of 8.7”.
If my goal was primarily shooting macro I would not choose this lens, but with that said its close focusing was useful and I don’t recall any circumstance where I couldn’t get the shot because the lens should have focused closer.
